Look at this lovely E12 I ran into yesterday.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

You don’t see too many of these just parked at the bank any more. This one looks to be in terrific shape and it’s got the proper transmission, so clearly someone who gets it owns it.

ERMAGERD!! A Euro import too, we never got the tax-special 520. We have a pretty well kept red E12 in now on Alpina wheels. Love me some old 5 series.

I was wondering if it was an import. So, we just got the 528 and 530? It’s a really sharp design, the E12.

Perhaps the grey market importer added them to be compliant.

Imported prior to the 25 year rule, so needed those to be compliant. with the regulations at the time.

Yep, just the 528 and 530. The rest of the world got these 4 cylinder cars as a base. The E12 is a great design, for sure.

The green is so sweet. It looked amazing. Caught my eye from far away. I don’t know which motor it had. The owner wasn’t around. All I saw is what you see. It’s a funny car to import, but I’m completely in favor of it.

Why is it funny to import? This way you don’t get those fugly US bumpers!

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
07/29/2016 at 00:51

Because it’s the 4-cylinder. Usually, you’d import the more powerful car. Otherwise, you can just import the bumpers and save on shipping.

Exactly. At least he went for the 520. There can’t be too many of them over here. He might have the only one. I wonder if it has a/c. I remember on the early 528 and 530's, the air conditioning was supposed to be terrible.

If he got it from Euroland there’s probably no A/C in it anyway. That took us years to discover. Early ‘90's.

Kinja'd!!!1

I guess it really did take that long after the war for folks to start being comfortable with luxuries over there. When I spent that summer in England in 1988, I stayed with a family that, while not upper class, were making out fine and their cars were the cheapest pieces of shit. They did have a nice t.v., though.

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee
08/04/2016 at 09:51

Kinja'd!!!1

The TV is sacred. I know people buying a new set every 2 years for either the World or European championship Football, doesn’t surprise me. The British are extra funny with cars as they like the idea they get a local car, the only reason the English Automotive sector survived as long as it did in the first place. So they’d prefer a cheapskate Austin Metro over a far superior and more complete Honda Jazz.

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
08/04/2016 at 23:55

Kinja'd!!!1

People here practically build houses around the television. Mine is like 10 years old now. Works like a charm except when it decides to only play sound and I have to unplug it and plug it back in again for the picture to come back. The English were so automotively patriotic. Although these people had an early VW Rabbit 4-door with only one working door, and a beat-up early 80's Cortina. Which I guess was British. Their neighbors had a great yellow 2CV. That was how I fell in love with those things. I also remember visiting a Reliant dealership which was awesome.

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee
08/05/2016 at 04:46

Kinja'd!!!1

10 years old? Is that even a flat screen??? Hahaha. The last time I bought a tv was 5 years ago. I had to replace the one that was stolen.

What Reliant were in that dealership? They haven’t made cars for like what, 20 years?

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
08/06/2016 at 03:08

Kinja'd!!!1

It’s a flat screen, yes. It’s not as thin as they make them now, but it has a nice picture. Was it stolen with the Mercedes, or was there another break in?

I guess it was one of the last Robins. This was 1988. They may have stopped production as late as 2000. I think someone bought the company at one point and kept building them.

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee
08/06/2016 at 07:09

Kinja'd!!!1

It is Full HD? Mine was stolen in the second break in. During our stay in Paris.

I always thought the Scimitar SS1 outlived the Robin, that one was made during the ‘90's. With a Nissan 1.8 engine!

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
08/08/2016 at 03:01

Kinja'd!!!1

Yeah, real full HD. Did you tell me about that one? What else did they get?

Reliant built the Robin until 2001, believe it or not. And then a plastics company bought the rights, but they only lasted one year. So, 2002. Incredible. The Scimitar was cool in the 70's. Torch has one. It's funny it ended with a Dastun motor.

Just some electronics. An XBox, an e-reader, a laptop. I’m sure I’ve mentioned it before, I’m always amazed people getting through all this hassle/risk just for a what, 200 euros on the black market? Well, maybe there’s hardly any risk actually. But still.

2002???? Hahaha. People were still buying these???? Those British are truly amazing. That ‘70's Scimitar was epic.

Funny to always hear Mazda revived the English roadster while the Scimitar SS1 was still being made. It’s more like Mazda made the English roadster a good business case ;-)

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
08/09/2016 at 01:03

Kinja'd!!!1

Yeah, it hardly does seem worth the effort and risk. How do they know someone’s not looking after the house? I guess they stake it out pretty good.

They didn’t sell many in 2002. That plastics company only built 70. I can’t imagine them selling in the 90's, but the English are weird. It was a fine British product, I guess.

Mazda made the Japanese roadster a good business case. Like Datsun before them.

With my vast amount of recognizable cars on the driveway it’s obvious at least someone isn’t home ;-) Some stakin’ out/monitoring had be done. At least, that’s what the police claimed.

Yeah, it was probably pretty obvious you were on vacation. That’s how they got me.

I was thinking of the Z which pretty much killed the British sports car industry. It's not a roadster, but it made the case for little sports cars that were actually reliable.

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee
08/10/2016 at 04:32

Kinja'd!!!1

Ah, the Z... That one wasn’t that huge over here either, I think I’ve seen more Stags than Z’s in my life for example. Johan Cruijff did drive a Z. And later an SM. El Salvador...

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
08/10/2016 at 22:44

Kinja'd!!!1

That’s interesting. They sold tons of Z’s over here. My sister had one. And, she traded her MG for it. America was always the biggest market for the British sports cars, so once we went Japanese, they were finished. Cruijff had great taste. What a legend. You’d think he would have had the French car first.

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee
08/11/2016 at 05:13

Kinja'd!!!1

Yeah, the US definitely made way for the Z. Wasn’t your sis’s Z way, WAY faster than her B (I presume it was a B, or was it a Midget?)?

Cruijff was a legend. We have a “trope” around here, “Cruijffiaanse uitspraak”, or “Quote from Cruijff” for which you say something that totally makes no sense at first. But when you start really thinking...

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris

Kinja'd!!!1

That was like getting from a Formula Vee to a Formula 1 car!!!

Yeah, in typical Amsterdam dialect. “Elk nadeel heb z’n voordeel” (Every disadvantage has its advantage) is probably one of his most renowned quotes. But there’s so many, according to Cruijff the world was so incredibly simple. I loved this one as well:

Someone who has juggled the ball in the air during a game, after which four defenders of the opponent get the time to run back, that’s the player people think is great. I say he has to go to a circus.

That’s funny. There was a famous baseball player for the Yankees named Yogi Berra who was known for his similar type of misspeaking. He would say things like, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” And, “If you don’t go to their funeral, they won’t come to yours.” One of my favorites is, “no one goes there any more. It’s too crowded.”

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee
08/14/2016 at 05:58

Kinja'd!!!1

Yogi Berra! Is that where Hanna-Barbera got the name for that bear from? Cool to know who influenced Lenny Kravitz to come up with his epic music. Nice quotes. What about Cruijff’s

Italianen kennen niet van je winnen, maar je ken wel van ze verliezen.

Or rather: “Italians can’t win from you but you can lose from them”. Epic.

There’s just so many. This one always puts a smile on my face as well:

Ik heb nog nooit een zak geld een goal zien maken.

Which means: “I’ve never seen a bag of cash score any goal.” It’s about all that money going on in soccer nowadays.

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
08/15/2016 at 23:45

Kinja'd!!!1

That is where they got the name. Although, they claimed it was a coincidence when he sued, but it obviously was from him.

Those are good. He’s right. At least about the gold. Yogi’s weren’t always sports specific. Another great one is, “half the lies they say about me aren’t true.”

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee
08/16/2016 at 03:52

Kinja'd!!!1

Haha, there actually was a legal fight over this? Awesome.

Of course some writer took Cruijff’s quotes to come up with some self help management book. Cruijff always was quite fond on himself. What about:

Voordat ik een fout maak, maak ik die fout niet.

Or... “Before I make a mistake, I won’t make that mistake”. ??????

People do try to bring the bow tie back, but it’s hard to pull off. It is perfect for the Wankerl customer. I like the idea of a dress code for our customers. We don’t want any slobs driving our cars. It would totally spoil our image.

Ah, pronunciation is my one issue since I’m just reading it. How do you pronounce the “ draai-” part?

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > Jonee
08/19/2016 at 03:34

Kinja'd!!!1

Maybe we should bring the beret back in as well. My curls wouldn’t approve of this but I always loved the beret!

Draai... “Dr” like the opening from “Dremel” but with a somewhat “rolling” “R”. A double “aa” is a hard “a” and ending it with a “i” means you finish it with the sound you make when starting “you” (so leave out the “ou”). So a bit like “I” but with a flatter, more circled mouth.

Kinja'd!!! Jonee > Jobjoris
08/19/2016 at 17:36

Kinja'd!!!1

I’m all for the beret. I don’t think I could really pull one off, either, but I’d try. I have a close friend who always keeps a beret in his car just in case. He also directs commercials and music videos and wears a beret when he’s on the job like some old cartoon version of a director.

I cannot follow your description. It sounds like a million things going on all at once. I use this website and I’m not sure if the pronunciation is the same as what you’re saying.

There may have been. I didn’t get to see much sailing this year. It always looks like mayhem to me. I can’t tell what the heck those boats are doing. I did see a Dutch sailor win apparently once, though. Even though it looked to me like there were boats in front of him, and people were going in every direction.

Well, it was never released until a couple years ago. It was to be their Sgt. Pepper’s , but then the Beatles released their Sgt. Pepper’s and Brian Wilson had a nervous breakdown. But, a bunch of the songs turned up on later albums, so you could kind of piece together what the album was going to be like. It was a lot different from their early “ Help Me Rhonda ” days. Surf’s Up has always been my favorite song.

I don’t know what the words are about, either, but it sounds very poetic. “Dove nested towers the hour was Strike the street quicksilver moon.” That doesn’t mean anything, but it sounds real pretty. He wrote a lot of lyrics with this guy Van Dyke Parks who was a nutty hippie from those days. There’s another song where he says, “Cotillions squared to fight,” but a cotillion is like a school dance, so I imagine all these kids in fancy clothes having a rumble.

The wind giveth and the wind taketh away. Did you do any sailing this year?

You should get out on the water more. That sounds like a lovely boat. My brother had a sailboat when he lived in Panama and it was a beautiful thing to go out on.

CLASS OF 1984!!! My nextdoor neighbor had that as a Betamax in the house but we were never allowed to see it back then. Had a different cover though.

Kinja'd!!!

Still haven’t watched it actually.

I need more time. The new Sales is taking up all my spare time at the moment!

It’s a great movie. Really over the top and very entertaining. It features a young Michael J. Fox before he was Alex P. Keaton.

Well, at least business is good. I guess we’re not going to get to see Wimille’s car this year.

IT BETTER! I have to see that car. My mother’s going to be so disappointed. Maybe by next year she’ll have the 911, though.

No worries, it will happen. Just tell your mum that if she already had bought that 911 I would have gotten over there for sure. How much time upfront do you need me to tell you I’m heading over to the east-coast?

Nextdoor Neighbor Jan asked me to help him get a low mileage 911 from Germany. And I found out nextdoor Neighbor Maurice has a... TVR Tuscan! And Franz (the Ferrari-neighbor) had a cousin over with his Peugeot 203 yesterday. Who was wondering how on earth I knew what it was being “that young” hahaha. I really live in Classic Car heaven...

A couple weeks. I can get there pretty quickly. If you were going to be there tomorrow, that might be hard.

Holy cow, yeah. That’s a great neighborhood. You should organize your own car show. You’ll have to find a way to get behind the wheel of that Tuscan. Does it have that crazy paint? I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a 203 in person. That’s pretty cool. I guess he had no idea about your French car fetish.

I’ll keep that in mind. My pal Simon insisted we’d go to the Oktoberfest but even that will be hard...

This was at lunch last Saturday. Do notice that sticker on the TVR above the license plate.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s a bit of that pearlescent paint if you mean that. Not sure if he’ll let me behind the wheel though.

Oktoberfest in Germany? I bet that’s a good time.

I can’t read the sticker. What does it say? “Look, but don’t touch?”

This crazy paint.

Best party I ever attended. But my free-time is scarce right now (and I’d prefer to go see that Type 57!) so that’s questionable.

“Because Porsches are for Girls”. Hahaha, he has had it for 4 years now. He’s had his 3rd cylinderhead-revision two months ago. It is a great car, not that wicked color.

Those Germans know how to have a good time. I’d like to do that one time. I like Germany.

Ha. That is funny. My mother wouldn’t like that. But, she wouldn’t like a TVR, either. Not with that reliability. How many miles does the head last?

Last couple of years all kinds of “Oktoberfeste” are organized all over the places. For a reason.

It was even more funny when I told him what 12 years of Porsche ownership had actually cost me (next to the regular maintenance): one krukaskeerring and an issue with the alarm. Which was aftermarket anyway.

Can’t last many miles though he opted for some more “laid-back” head this time to prevent having to get another one so he probably lost some hp. I see/hear him drive it once every week so it’s decently used.

Porsches are pretty amazing that way. I saw an old 912 that looked totally unrestored puttering around the other day. It was a beautiful thing.

I bet it’s worth losing those horses. It’s a stunning car. Nice that he’s uses it.
